The Life You’ve Always Wanted by John Ortberg – A Book Review

I was debating making a major life change, one that would allow more time for God and others in my life, and this book was a perfect thing to read slowly and thoughtfully during that process.

He does a good job of saying the focus of our faith should be ortbert becoming more like Jesus and not necessarily the boundaries that we often place around faith. In the opening chapters Ortberg warns us against becoming inauthentic, weird, judgmental, worn out, superficial, and foolish. Subsequent to presenting the disciplines, Ortberg discusses a plan for integrating the practices into a life that endures.

What Ortberg does is firmly, but in a light and easily digestible form, place these disciplines in the context of being a Christ follower, with a selection of quotes and stories and ideas from his extensive knowledge of Christian faith and history.

Accordingly, Ortberg warns of outward and inauthentic change, which includes image management, judgment, legalism, and superficiality.

Want to Read Currently Reading Read. This book is a good book for guidance in spiritual growth. But this is more than just a book about things to do to be a good Christian. It took me longer than I would have liked to get through this book, but all in all it was a really good, thought-provoking read. They’re a bit out of order in the separate “participant’s guide” and in our study, and I’d like to know a bit more about how Ortberg picked those 8.

For what it is worth, I think the book cover is terrible too. Mar 18, Caitlin rated it really liked it. Many hail this book as the classic on the topic. I appreciate the focus on “training” instead of “trying” to become more like Christ. I enjoyed it and I would recommend it, but there is enough to keep it from being one of my favorite books. When I first approached this book, I’ll admit I was skeptical.
