The stone that is created will destroy the nail and end the plague, but whoever touches it to the nail will die. I won’t say that it’s not a middle grade novel – it is, but be sure your child is ready before handing them this novel.
The rest requires speculation. It never fails to surprise me how middle grade books deal with so heavy topics in a way that brings hope, without shying away from the darker nature of the matters. I also like how Brandon shows the growth of Seth that kid’s actions sometimes make me want to scream – and then I realize that he is imaginary even though he acts like a lot of boys I know and have known.

I appreciate his ongoing discussion of the nature of good and evil, the power of our choices, and in this one, the consequences of choosing to believe or not. While Mull’s plots flow in a logical order never bouncing around, what I love about his books is he’s one of the few authors that really manages to surprise me.

On the other in doing this he loses much of the childlike innocence of the previous novel and like many popular young adult and middle grade fantasy series takes his books in a much darker direction. You may have read about centaurs and satyrs, fairies plqgue fog giants. One of my favorite parts of the book comes in chapter seventeen Be warned.

Rise of the Evening Star” leaves off, during the same summer of the second year at Fablehaven. Coulter is bit by a dark fairy and turned to a shadow which only Seth can see due to his encounter with the Revenant.

Fablehaven might really fall in this book and they have no one to help them but the people and creatures within Fablehaven which of course as in all the other novels falls to Seth and Kendra, mostly falling on Kendra’s shoulders. The dialogue snaps and sizzles. More preserves face destruction as the Society of the Evening Star relentlessly pursues new talismans.
Two hidden artifacts have been found. I don’t remember thinking that the text got in the way of the story or pulled me out of the story, so I suppose that means he did a great job!
The introduction of the former Fablehaven keeper felt a bit deus ex machina and made the resolution seem a bit easy, but I still enjoyed how it brought things full circle that were introduced in the first book. Strange things are afoot at Fablehaven.
