As someone tells him: The transition to the beginning of the story caused me some confusion for the next chapter or two.

At the very moment that Martin Luther nails his ninety-five theses to a church door and launches the movement that will divide the Roman Catholic Church, a hereie is born, his fate marked by the political and religious upheaval taking root in Europe.
And this is Delibes’ warning to us all, whether our truth is overtly religious or garbed in the robes of science, to the extent that we seek to stifle dissent, to the extent that we shout hefeje those who disagree with us, then, to that extent, we are the inquisition.

Customers who bought this item also bought. Delibes obviously strove to paint a portrait of life in 16th century Spain, but he does so in an annoyingly snobbish miguuel. More than anything, The Heretic is a hhereje story, and it’s well told. In the final section Delibes nicely presents the fatalistic outlook — and the bizarre near-normality of the proceedings — in the face of the outrageous suppression of any thought inimical to the prevailing doctrine.
It has been quick and in good condition.
And those two qualities barely even apply to the two main characters – a father and son who spend the first half of the novel indulging in ugly perversions ep still attaining great success, despite their reprehensible behavior and belief in their entitled positions. Cipriano’s mother dies at his birth, and it’s something his father, Bernardo, decides he can never forgive him for.
While the signs particularly Cipriano’s birth-date are ominous, Delibes doesn’t bog down the narrative with a particular message, or theology or history: The book isn’t truly surprising, but it is also far from predictable, a confident writer taking his time — while keeping the reader in suspense — in leading to his conclusions. The best part is the presentation of the Inquisition at its height and the feelings of individuals caught up in its web.
